Arab High School will have a couple of coaching positions to fill in the near future.

Boys head basketball coach Justin Jonus officially submitted his resignation to school officials Monday night, and football defensive coordinator Buddy Pell is leaving Arab for the same position at Hartselle.

Jonus, who plans to remain in his teaching position for now, certainly had a successful run during his time at Arab, where he worked his way up. In his five years as varsity boys head coach, Jonus led the Knights to three straight Sweet Sixteen appearances beginning with the 2017-18 season, when the Knights won a Class 5A sub-regional.

The following year, the Knights were also the regular season area champions, area tournament champions and sub-region champs. The Knights also won the sub-regional in the 2019-20 season and had a couple of marquee wins as well during the year, defeating top-ranked and defending state champion Plainview and Buckhorn, which was ranked No. 2 in the state.

Overall, the Knights recorded 77 wins.

Jonus was the varsity girls coach for three seasons before that. Under Jonus, the Lady Knights were 62-32, including a 23-7 mark in the 2015-16 season. The Lady Knights were ranked in the top 10 in the state every year, ending one season ranked in the state’s “Power 15,” which includes all classifications. Jonus was named the Alabama 5A Coach of the Year after that season.
