Theresa Zeman opened the meeting and Nancy Paetz and Wanda Landmon served as hosts. The minutes as taken by Lorna Menzel and the treasurer's report given by Kerry Aaron was accepted. There were 122 patrol hours reported.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the spring clean-up day on March 24. The flowers are beautiful.
Theresa asked everyone to begin thinking about the fall cookout. A date and location need to be set. Volunteers will be needed for the preparations.
Kerry Aaron spoke about Shelia Thompson's death. The group agreed she would be missed in the neighborhood.
One neighbor told of a dog biting her leg when she was taking a walk on Waldrop Road. The two small dogs get out through a doggie door and the owner was very apologetic. The dogs had their shots.
Speeders are a big concern for the residents. Two residents said they saw a yellow car nearly hit a child while driving excessively fast.
Debbie Swords was the first speaker. She has worked in the Circuit Clerk's office for 12 years. She is a candidate for Circuit Clerk. She is married to Gary Swords of Swords Jewelry.
The Circuit Clerk manages two courthouses, processes evictions, drug courts, and juvenile court. Twenty-eight employees used to perform the same duties as the nine current employees. The caseload has increased.
There were 2,250 criminal cases in 2016. Budget cuts have frozen wages and created a hiring freeze.
The employees do a good job and perform professionally.
Gene East spoke next. He is a candidate for coroner. He currently works for Gamble Holding, Inc., which owns most of the funeral homes in Marshall County. He has worked in the funeral industry for 32 years.
Unattended deaths require a coroner. There were over 300 unattended deaths in 2017. An unattended death is any death that does not occur in the presence of medical personnel.
Deputy coroners are volunteers and receive no pay. Deputy coroners take classes to learn how to determine cause of death. They work closely with law enforcement. He feels he has resources that will save the county money.
Deputy Alan Edmonds spoke next. He was asked if law enforcement carry Narcan for drug overdoses. He said law enforcement personnel could not carry the drug. Only certified EMTs can carry Narcan.
Mr. LeBert said the volunteer fire department's first responders could not carry it either.
Someone had garbage dumped in their yard. Alan said they had someone who would investigate things like that.
All the speed limit signs are posted now. Alan said they would spot check the area.
The next meeting will be Monday, July 9, 2018. Hosts will be Pete and Cathy LeBert.
