Several JV Wildcat athletes had top finishes in the Guntersville JV track and field meet this past Tuesday.
Athletes from Guntersville, Arab, Scottsboro, DAR, Albertville, Brindlee Mountain St. Paul Catholic and Boaz all competed at Chorba-Lee Stadium in this annual meet hosted by GHS.
Guntersville placed 1st in four different events including Nayeli Escobedo in the 200-meter run, Cesligh Martin in discuss, the boys 4x400 team made up of Dadrien Waller, Grayson Moon, Taylor King and Noah Hadwin and Royce Baucom in discuss.
Guntersville also had several athletes finish 2nd in the respective events. They included Zakiya Richey in the 100-meter run, the girls 4x400 team made up of Anna Newman, Amiyah Hampton, She’Londa Wellington and Baylee Bonds, Hannah Lane in the 300-meter hurdles, Cesleigh Martin in the shot put and the boys 4x100 and 4x800 team made up of Dadrien Waller, Grayson Moon, Taylor King and Noah Hadwin.
Other top finishers were She’Londa Wellington, 5th in the 100-meter run and the 200-meter run; Amiyah Hampton, 4th in the 400-meter run; Anna Newman, 5th in the 400-meter run; Chelsea Saucedo, 4th in the 800-meter run; Baylee Bonds, 5th in long jump; Maddox Werkmeister, 3rd in the 400-meter run and 4th in 200-meter run; Nathan Benson, 4th in 800-meter run and Luke Pilotte, 5th in 1,600-meter run.
Guntersville track and field coach Chris Bashaw said the meet was productive for his team.
"This meet was a good opportunity to brush off the rust coming out of spring break and have some success for the younger athletes" he said. "On the ladies side of the meet, we had quite a few PR’s and High finishes. We had some bright spots on the boys side as well. Our younger guys are starting to get comfortable racing as I have saw improvements each meet."
Bashaw added, "We have one more true JV meet left in the season which is next Tuesday night at the Albertville JV Invitational. After that meet, a large majority of our JV athletes will transition over to the varsity meets to help add depth and fill gaps. This young group of athletes has a lot or talent and hidden potential. As each individual athlete gains confidence and has success, we are seeing their excitement."
The Brindlee Mountain Lions also had several athletes finish at the top or near the top in several events. Chantzley Kirkland finished 1st in the long jump and 3rd in the shot put, Devon Murray finished 2nd in the long, Kailyn Childress finished 3rd in the 200-meter run and Colton Hall finished 4th in the 1,600-meter run.
