An alert reader asked “What’s the holdup on taking down the old utility poles on the Warrenton Causeway?”

Several months ago, the Guntersville Electric Board added nice new steel utility poles and LED lights alongside one side of the Warrenton or Highway 69 causeway. There had always been wooden utility poles on both sides of the causeway but the new poles are large enough to hold all the lines.

The thinking behind the project was to improve reliability – the metal poles are planted deeper and are more substantial than the wooden poles – while also beautifying the causeway.

The old poles remain up because one telcom company still has to move its line off the old poles to the new poles. That is expected to happen possibly as early as next week, according to Guntersville Electric Board manager Jason Kirkland.

“The last we heard, they were supposed to move their line starting June 13,” Kirkland said.

It won’t take Guntersville Electric crews long at all to take down the old poles once that line is moved. Everything is expected to be wrapped up on the project by the end of the month.
