Jimmy O’Neal Spencer’s defense attorneys filed a motion ahead of his January trial for change of venue in his upcoming capital murder trial, as well as one for jurors to be questioned one-on-one. Another petition was filed for questionnaires to be sent to prospective jurors.

Spencer is charged with the 2018 murders of Marie Martin, her 7-year-old grandson Colton Lee, and her neighbor Martha Reliford in Guntersville. Spencer was on parole when he committed the crimes.

Earlier this month, attorneys for Spencer filed a motion to stop “in memoriam” T-shirts from being worn by the victims’ family during the trial, which they feel could influence jurors.

A September 7 hearing was rescheduled for October 29, due to Covid-19. Spencer’s trial date is set for January 10, 2022, and is expected to last two to three weeks.
