The first full year has gone by since the City School Board contracted with the company ABM to do an energy savings project across the system.
Don McPherson gave a report to the Board on its energy savings over that year. He said the energy savings measures that were implemented included:
• BAS controls
• HVAC replacement
• Cold plasma ionization
• HVAC reconditioning
• Building envelope upgrades
• Refrigeration management
• Water conservation
• One time maintenance
Generally speaking, energy savings were not realized at Guntersville Elementary and Cherokee Elementary, but they were offset by the savings realized at Guntersville High and Guntersville Middle. In total, McPherson said, the energy savings exceeded ABMs guaranteed savings by nearly $25,000.
He said they would be more closely analyzing Guntersville Elementary and Cherokee Elementary in year 2 of monitoring to try to get savings there as well.
He said the cold plasma ionization has benefits beyond energy savings. He said it helps take the smell out of athletic locker rooms and also helps reduce the COVID virus.
“I have installed cold plasma ionization in my home,” he said.
99 of the cold plasma units were installed across the system.
