The Guntersville Wildcats had a big day at the Scottsboro Invitational last Saturday as six athletes and three relay teams finished with 1st place medals.

A total of 20 teams from around north Alabama competed in the annual event.

First place finishers for the Lady Wildcats were Jayden Watkins in the 200-meter run, She’Londa Wellington in the 400-meter run, the girls 4x100 team, Jadyn Bonds in the high jump, Baylee Bonds in the long jump, Langley White in the triple jump and Cesleigh Martin in the shot put.

First place finishers for the boys were Royce Baucom in the discus throw and the 4x400 and 4x100 team.

Guntersville track coach Chris Bashaw said the event as a whole was good for both teams leading into county and sectionals.

“The girls team had a lot of bright spots and surprises,” he said. “Like the guys team, we tried a few new races for some of the ladies and that proved to be an exciting find when the results came out. She’Londa Wellington ran the 400m dash for the first time this year bringing home a top finish. Hannah Lane finished 2nd in the 100m dash and 2nd in the 200m dash.  She has spent most of this season running hurdles, 400m dash and high jump.”

He continued, “Jadyn Bonds tied for 1st place in the girls high jump clearing 4 feet 10 inches. Cesleigh Martin had a huge day in the JV shot put with a throw of 28 feet 1.5 inches bringing home the gold. Jayden Watkins had probably the biggest day of all those we tried in new events. Jayden has high jumped this season getting better each week. Saturday, she finished 4th based off tie breakers with a jump of 4 feet 10inches. Prior to high jump, she had finished 3rd in the triple jump with a mark of 32 feet 11.5 inches which was a 3 feet PR.  We entered Jayden in the 200-meter dash to see if this may be an option for the upcoming county meet.  She exceeded expectations by winning not only her heat but the whole event.  She wasn’t even in the fast heat which is what was impressive.”

The Guntersville track team will compete in the Marshall County championships on April 13 in Guntersville. Sectionals will be April 24-25 also in Guntersville.
