Excitement is building for the Asbury Rams football team.

They’ll compete in their first ever 7-on-7 passing camp next Thursday at Appalachian. The linemen will also be attending to work on blocking skills.

In July, they’ll be going to a camp at Sylvania and then one in Albertville on July 20.

“It’s something new for us,” Coach Chris Williams said. “It will be good for us no matter how we do at the competition.”

Asbury had 48 players at the conclusion of spring practice. 14 were 8th graders.

“We wanted to dress 30 to 35 on the varsity,” Williams said.

A couple guys came to Williams after the spring and said they’d wanted to try it but football was just not for them. Some of the other kids have had some summer travel and other commitments. But Williams has had 25 or so working out regularly in the off-season program.

“I think we’re going to be pretty close to having that 30 to 35 dress out for the varsity this fall,” he said.

He said it has been a challenge to get all of the 25 there at the same time, but he’s excited they’re working with that many.
