The Georgia Mountain Volunteer Fire Department discovered some bank account irregularities several weeks ago and asked the Marshall County Sheriff's Office to investigate.
That investigation came to a head Wednesday when longtime firefighter and former chief Jason Edmonds was arrested and charged with theft.
The sheriff's office released this statement, per deputy chief Steve Guthrie:
"Approximately a month ago, board members with the Georgia Mountain Volunteer Fire Dept discovered misappropriated funds in their office and asked the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office to investigate. The investigation reveled over $5,000 was missing.
"Based on these findings, former volunteer fire chief Jason H. Edmonds was arrested and charged with theft of property 1st and illegal possession/use of a credit/debit card. Bond was set at $30,000.
"We would like to thank the Georgia Mountain Fire Dept for their full cooperation during this investigation."
