The Guntersville Swim Team sent 36 swimmers to the ARPA State Meet in Birmingham last weekend.

Several swimmers took medals in individual events and in relays. Michael Payne and Kyle Zeisset medaled in every event they swam. Swimmers are allowed to qualify in up to three individual events and up to two relays.

Michael Payne (15-18) placed 3rd in backstroke; 2nd in 100m free and 4th in 50m free.

Mark Payne (15-18) finished 6th in 50m breaststroke and 6th in the 100m individual medley (IM). The 15-18 Boys 200m Medley and Free relay teams of Michael Payne, Mark Payne, Ben Buckelew, and John-Miller Hunter placed 6th in both relay events.

The 8 & under boys 100m Medley and Free relay teams of Kyle Zeisset, Jackson Carr, William Wharton, and Jonathan Backstrom also got 6th in both relay events.

Individually, Kyle Zeisset (8 & under) placed 4th in 25m breaststroke, 7th in 25m fly, and 8th in 25m free. Jackson Carr (8 & under) finished 4th in 25m freestyle, and 6th in 50m freestyle.

Other individuals who medaled were Maggie Flanagan (6 & under) who finished 2nd in the 25m free and 7th in 25m backstroke. As well as Addie Grace Smith who placed 8th in 50m backstroke.

Two other relay teams also medaled. The 9-10 boys relay team of Aiden Dempsey, Taylor Oaks-Cooper, Jackson Ellis, and Luke McCurdy placed 8th in the 200m Medley relay. The 6 & under boys relay team of Michael Alred, Benjamin Ellis, Jonathan Flanagan, and Wyatt Carr placed 4th in the 100m Free relay.

Other swimmers who competed at state include Camden Ellis, Jessa Ellis, Kendal Grey, Jesus Martinez, Ben McCurdy, Scarlett Kistler, Joy Kistler, Tanner Park, Marcel Vanderwel, Annabel Ausley, Kendal Beith, Will Edwards, Ashley Zeisset, Joel Grey, Greyson Hamilton, Kaylee Hamilton, Evelyn Carr and Madeline Wharton

After the meet, Coach Paige Townsend had this to say about the team: “These swimmers worked so hard and I’m beyond proud of them! We placed 3rd in the medium division at the state meet and got 37 medals as a team.”
