Every 2 seconds, someone in the United States needs a blood donation.

LifeSouth Community Blood Center in Albertville will be holding donation drives across the county for the remainder of the summer to help those locally who are in need.

Kami May, District Community Development Coordinator for LifeSouth, says right now, the need for donors is more than ever.

"There is always a decrease in donations during the summer months," May said. "People are off on vacations and doing lots of other things during summer but then you throw in a 14 month quarantine. We always see a significant decrease but now, we've seen a plummet."

May said they are really struggling for donors and wants to encourage the community to give if they are able.

"I want to everyone to not think of the needle but think of the need. For what takes less than an hour to donate, you are giving someone their life back," she continued. "All donations also stay here local to help those in our community. We want to have our shelves stocked so when we need it most, we have it ready. You never know when it might be you or someone you love who will one day be in need."

May added that if there are concerns over if being vaccinated effects their donation, they should rest assured it does not.

"Having the COVID vaccine does not keep you from donating. All we need to know is when did you receive the vaccine. You can get the vaccine that morning and still be ready to donate that same afternoon," she said. "Just one donation of blood saves 3 lives. We hope the drives across the county will bring those out who are able to give."
