A beloved white pelican known as “Lonesome Pete” is lonesome no more.

The pelican somehow became injured and, for at least the last 2 years, has made his year-round home on the Browns Creek arm of Guntersville Lake as he was unable to fly back north with the rest of the flock in the spring.

Michael Kirkpatrick, an avid boater and seaplane pilot who lives at Point of Pines, keeps tabs on Pete and reports on him in these pages from time-to-time.

The last time Kirkpatrick saw him, there was another pelican with him. “It was his girlfriend!” Kirkpatrick said excitedly.

He took a photo, but it's too blurry to use here. Kirkpatrick explained that it was taken from an airplane at some distance.

But the new development of Pete having a girlfriend meant a name change was in order, Kirkpatrick said.

“Lucky Pete is his new name,” he said.
