Guntersville's Paul Bruce was the low medalist at the Alabama Amateur qualifier at Riverchase. He will now play in the Alabama Amateur State Championship next week.

Fresh off being part of Guntersville High's state runner-up golf team, Paul Bruce has now qualified to play in the Alabama State Amateur Championship next month.

Paul fired a 7-under par 65 to earn medalist honors at the qualifier played at Riverchase Country Club near Birmingham. He was 4 strokes ahead of the nearest competitor.

The 103rd Alabama State Amateur Championship will be played June 6-9 at Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen, Ala. The championship is conducted by the Alabama Golf Association.

Paul is the son of Brad and Christie Bruce. Paul and his brother John are avid golfers and are both members of the Guntersville High team. The family lives at Gunter's Landing, where the boys play a lot.

The Guntersville High team won all its regular season tournaments. The team struggled in the first round of the state tournament in Prattville, but regained their composure and rallied the second day to finish as the state runner-up.
