The Marshall County Commission approved last Wednesday plans to install a water tower on Shin Point Road, a project that will “kill two birds with one stone” by providing the area better water access and giving the road much-needed repairs.
Last April, residents of Shin Point road asked the Commission to add their road to the county maintenance list. They asked the county to repair the extensive damage to the roughly half-mile dirt road, which was is so bad residents can't get trash pick-up, mail delivery, school buses or emergency services at their homes.
At that time in 2022, District 2 Commissioner Rick Watson said he had reached out to various organizations for guidance about the road but was told there was nothing the county could do since it was not on the official inventory. On top of that, it was legally declared a private road in a lawsuit nearly 30 years ago.
After months of trying to find a way to help the residents of Shin Point Road, Watson devised a plan that should be a “win-win” for the county.
“We’re going to put a water tank at the top of the mountain… And then I’ll have to have an easement to my water tank, that I can maintain my easement up to the water tank, and that in turn will help the residents of Shin Point,” Watson said.
The water tank will be placed on a piece of land near Shin Point Road, which will need to be maintained so county trucks and equipment can reach the tank. Going about it this way means Shin Point doesn’t have to be officially added to the county road maintenance list, which would have impacted the rest of the county, Watson said.
“It kills two birds with one stone,” County Attorney Clint Maze said. “We get to apply additional water pressure up there. That needs to be done. And gives the county the legal ability to go on that property.”
