Whopper Onions

Don & Virginia Hayes of Snow Point grew these whopper Candy onions that tipped the scales at nearly 2-1/2 pounds each.

You might remember that Asbury Farm Supply was selling some onion sets back in the early spring that were supposed to produce whopper onions.

Charlie Baker of the store reports at least two of his growers had success.

Don & Virginia Hayes at Snow Point near Union Grove grew the onions pictured here. They tipped the scales at 2-1/2 lbs. and they're not quite fully grown.

The onions are of a variety called Candy. The company that produces them says they are yellow, globe-shaped, sweet hybrids with the potential to reach 6 inches. Days to harvest are 90 to 100 with storage potential of three months.

The company produces over 60 million Candy onion sets yearly.
