Dan Myrick of Scant City enjoys fishing at Guntersville Dam. The fishing has been off this year, he said. There just doesn't seem to be as much bait as usual in the waters below the dam.
Without bait, there haven't been a lot of sportfish.
"I don't know if it was the big flood earlier or what," Myrick said. "Some of the guys who fish down there a lot say there was a shad die-off."
But even though the fishing hasn't been up to its usual standard, Myrick has seen some unusual sights down there this year.
"I saw 3 sturgeon and a spoonbill," he said. "They're the first ones I've seen down there in what seems like forever."
Myrick grew up fishing below the dam with his father and other family members. Sturgeon and spoonbill were seen pretty regularly back then, he said.
It brought back memories to see the ones this year.
One of the sturgeon was a big one, he said.
Myrick enjoys fishing for stripe, catfish, bluegill and other species in the waters below the dam.
