Senior Spotlight
By Tyler Arnold
The seniors who are in the spotlight this week are Charisma Brutley, Isabelle Chassay, Ellie Blackwelder, Jackson Sorter and Rebecca Kovac.
Charisma’s mother is Crystal, 35, and her father is Jamaal Brutley, 42, and Charisma says “everyone calls him Chico.” Charisma is an active member of the Interact Club and has been on the high school cheer team for four years, and this year she was voted to be co-captain. Her favorite teachers are Coach Winkles, Coach Carr, and Mrs. McCoy; Charisma loves Mrs. McCoy’s class because she engages and interacts with the class.
Charisma’s plans for after graduation include attending Snead State for two years before transferring on a scholarship to a larger school so she can study psychology. Her dream job is a mental health psychologist. Charisma’s biggest life dream is to be successful, but money is not part of that dream; she just wants to be successful in her career, be happy, and make her parents proud. Her words of wisdom to underclassmen are “Everything that you do will result in consequences. You could be making the best decision of your life, or your biggest regret.” Before she dies, Charisma would like to see a whale in person and up close.
Isabelle Chassay’s parents are Dean and Holly Chassay, and she has a sister named Harper who is a sophomore. Isabelle is involved in marching band, concert band, jazz band, #LOVE, the Church of Christ youth group, and work-based learning. Her favorite teacher is Mr. Hyman because he inspired her to be the best musician she can be and also helped her find her passion.
Isabelle’s favorite school memory was when the marching band went to Universal Studios last year and got to ride roller coasters and march around the park. Isabelle’s plans for after graduation include going to Jacksonville State to major in music education, and her biggest life dream is to help people fall in love with music the same way she did. Isabelle’s words of wisdom to underclassmen are “Cherish every day. Life is short, and high school will end before you know it.”
Her greatest life accomplishment has been either making All-State Band on piccolo, or being crowned Miss Guntersville for 2019. Isabelle describes herself as “friendly,” and her @name for Mrs. White is @k8isgr8. Something few people know about Isabelle is that she’s gluten-intolerant, and the most creative excuse she’s given for getting out of homework is “I had band.” When asked to describe senioritis, Isabelle said, “Simultaneously being sad that high school is almost over and also being ready to start your life.” Isabelle would also like to give a TED Talk before she dies.
Elle Blackwelder’s parents are Carrie, 43, and Eric, 44, Blackwelder has three siblings, Devin, 24, Bryce, 20, and Natalie, 15. Ellie is involved in Art Club, NAHS, NHS, Spanish Club, SADD, cross country, and indoor track. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Jones because she has taught her more than anyone and allowed her to find and better her skill in art.
Ellie’s favorite school memory was winning Best in Show at art congressionals in her freshman year, and she plans to attend UAH after graduation to get a degree in graphic design. Her life’s biggest dream is to own her own art studio, and her greatest accomplishment has been making it through all her AP classes. Ellie describes herself as “artsy,” and her @name is @nothingbut_trashual. Ellie describes senioritis as “when all you wanna do is sleep or watch Netflix but your backpack keeps staring at you.”
Jackson Sorter’s parents are Tammy and Clyde Sorter. He’s been involved in the Technology Team, Engineering Club, Chess Club, and Scholar's Bowl. His favorite teacher is Mrs. White because she’s very intelligent. Jackson plans to get a graduate degree in Computer Science from UAH and then hopefully get a job working on interesting projects, like artificial intelligence or video games. Jackson’s biggest life dream is to become as knowledgeable and successful as possible, and his words of wisdom to underclassmen are “It’s only four years.” Jackson describes himself as “nihilistic,” and his @name for Mrs. McCoy is @Miranda-HauntinglyImpacted-McCoy.
Rebecca Kovac’s parents are Carol and Victor Kovac, and she has a sister named Elena. Rebecca is involved in basketball, swim team, track, Anchor Club, ODK, NHS, NSHS, and SGA. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. White because of how eager she is to teach her students and also because of her caring personality. Rebecca’s favorite school memory was when they saran-wrapped Coach Embry’s truck because she will never forget his reaction when he saw it. Rebecca plans to attend Auburn University after she graduates, and her words of wisdom to underclassmen are, “Don’t waste time worrying about the little things, and enjoy life while you can.” Rebecca’s greatest life accomplishment has been going to the State Spelling Bee because she worked hard for it for many years and was the first in her family to make it.
