Bill Burton

Billy “Bill” Wayne Burton (AKA “Pop”) of Guntersville, Alabama, passed away on April 15, 2023, after a lengthy battle with dementia and other related health complications. He was 88.

Bill was born in Alex City, Alabama on May 5, 1934, to Claude and Lois Burton. He grew up in Prattville, Alabama, and was one of five children. After graduating from Autauga County High School, Bill went on to Auburn University where he was a member of the ATO Fraternity.

While at Auburn, Bill enlisted in the Army and served two years in Germany. Upon his return to the states, he graduated from Auburn in 1958 with a degree in business management. Following graduation, Bill went to work at Redstone Arsenal Army Missile Command where he enjoyed a 35-year career in missile defense.

In 1962, he met Charlotte Lee McCreless in Huntsville, Alabama. Bill and Charlotte married in 1963. They ultimately established residence in Guntersville and had a son, Brad Burton, and a daughter, Paige Burton.

In 1993, Bill retired from Redstone. He spent his days enjoying time with family and friends, playing golf, watching Auburn football, traveling, and spending time on the lake.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers, Herbert Burton and Gene Burton. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte McCreless Burton, son Brad Burton (Mary), daughter Paige Burton, granddaughter Savannah Burton, brother Steve Burton (Sue), sister Ginger Burton, and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Guntersville First United Methodist Church on April 25, 2023 with visitation from 2:30pm-3:30pm followed by a “Celebration of Life” ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Shepherd’s Cove Hospice of Guntersville First United Methodist Church.
