Jean Whitaker Benefield was born to Pearl Hastings Whitaker and James Grady Whitaker on September 22, 1930.
Jean attended Marshall County High School and was the valedictorian of her class. Upon graduation, she attended Freed Hardeman College in Henderson, Tennessee.
On November 17, 1951, Jean married Raye Thompson Benefield. To that union was born one son, Larry McRae Benefield.
While living in Carollton, Georgia, she would visit Guntersville to do bookkeeping for her father, who owned Guntersville Concrete. Jean, Raye and McRae moved to Guntersville in the early 1960s, at which time she became the full-time bookkeeper for the family business. She and her brother, Mack, grew the business to include 8 locations in the north Alabama area until retirement.
Jean Benefield was a devoted Christian, and member of the Guntersville Church of Christ. Her influence continues to this day.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Grady Whitaker and Pearl Hastings Whitaker; husband, Raye Thompson Benefield; son, Larry McRae Benefield; brothers, James Grady Whitaker, Jr., Jerry Mack Whitaker and Charles Larimore Whitaker.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Kathryn Jeselyn Benefield and Raechel Jean Benefield; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Berezoski Benefield; and a host of family and special friends.
Funeral services for Jean were Sunday, September 8, at the Guntersville Church of Christ. Bro. Phillip Bradley and Bro. James Dudley officiated. Memorials should go to the Guntersville Church of Christ or the church's Baja Mission in memory of McRae.
