Matthew James (Jimmy) Hindman II passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at the age of 73.

Born November 1, 1948, he was the son of Matthew James Hindman and Arba Mae Huckaby. Jimmy lived and worked in Guntersville for most of his life.

Jimmy earned the honor of Eagle Scout and graduated from Marshall County High School in 1966. He attended Auburn University and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He earned a Doctorate of Pharmacy and married Guntersville beauty Nancy Ross in 1970.

Jimmy owned and operated Hindman’s Pharmacy in downtown Guntersville for more than 16 years. Many remember the pharmacy for the eclectic retail goods, Jimmy’s frank care for his patients and the many neighborhood children who frequented the shop and pressed their handprints into the concrete sidewalk in front. He was elected two terms to the Guntersville City Council and was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church.

Friends and family remember Jimmy’s witty, abstract sense of humor and signature horn rimmed glasses. He was a quiet observer of people and an excellent storyteller. He was a lifelong student of history with a deep appreciation for antiques, ancestry and Guntersville’s beginnings.

Jimmy is survived by his daughter Sarah Fox Elmer (Steve); his son Matthew James Hindman III (Tara); his granddaughter Zoanna Elmer; and two grandsons, Chet Elmer and Ames Hindman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Guntersville Historical Society.
