Mary Ann Gentry Bates of Tuscumbia passed away peacefully following a brief illness Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
Mary Ann was born in Preston to Annie Bell and Elbert Gentry. She was a graduate of Claysville School and Florence State University (now the University of North Alabama).
She was a Christian and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Russellville. She was also a member of the Alabama Retired Teachers Association, Russellville Study Club, Good Sam’s Camping Club, The Golden Squares, and Phi Kappa Delta.
Mary Ann retired from the Franklin County Board of Education after 34 years of loyal service as a dedicated teacher. Many have fond memories of Mary Ann’s impersonations of Minnie Pearl. She performed throughout north Alabama and on the Grand Ole Opry Stage where she met Minnie Pearl.
She is survived by her daughter, Molly Bates King (Jerry) of Tuscumbia, AL; grandchildren Fred Martinez (Paige) of New Orleans, LA, Chris Martinez (Lindsay) of Muscle Shoals, AL, Joey King of Trussville, AL; and Michael King (Laura) of Jacksonville, FL; great-grandchildren Rebecca Martinez of Gonzalez, LA, Preslee Martinez and Prentiss Martinez of Muscle Shoals, AL, Andi King, Cooper King, Bowen King, and Lemyn King of Trussville, AL; great-great-grandson Jameson Arceneaux of Gonzalez, LA; sister, Anita Marston (Howard) of Leoma, TN; nephew Casey Marston of Leoma, TN; a host of cousins; and many extended family and friends.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Emmitt Sherman Bates; and her parents, Annie Bell and Elbert Gentry.
Visitation was Saturday, July 10, in the chapel of Pinkard Funeral Home of Russellville, AL with the funeral service following with Rev. Alan Beasley officiating. Interment was at Franklin Memory Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Russellville First United Methodist Church Building Fund or Window Fund.
