Paul Dean Sr., our beloved husband, father and brother, was born in Belmont, MS, on November 30, 1938, and passed away on December 23, 2020.
Paul grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1956. He played on the tennis team that went to the state finals his senior year and pursued his passion for the sport for decades; playing well into his later years. He was also an avid golfer. He attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville.
As a young man, Paul moved to Florida working for NASA contractor, Hayes International, and was part of the team that put a man on the moon. He remained in Florida for many years as a business owner and successful salesman in the beauty products industry. He returned to the Guntersville area in the early 90’s where his family had roots for many generations. He was an avid Alabama fan and made us smile when he cheered the Tide on to victory.
He never met anyone he didn’t like and they him. His story and joke telling attributes were legendary with family and friends around the country. His smile and laughter brought joy to those who knew and loved him. It was hard to not be happy when you were in the presence of Paul Dean.
Paul had a competitive spirit his whole life and in later years played cards with his buddies at Big Spring Lake Golf Club and golfed or rode along to support his friends. No matter the game being played, no one ever minded losing to Paul because he always made it fun.
Paul married Kathleen Rice in 2018. They enjoyed time together eating out with friends, going to movies and taking road trips where they found beauty and humor along the way. Kathleen’s fondest memories of Paul is that of a great companion who was loyal and generous.
He always had a compassionate heart and in the last several years of his retirement, he could be seen driving the Guntersville Metro bus where he knew all of his passengers by their first names.
Paul’s last adventure was a getaway with his sons, brother, brother-in-law and cousin at a Tennessee State Park in October where they fished, golfed and enjoyed family time together. He truly lived life to the fullest until he contracted COVID in November.
Paul was loved by many and will be deeply missed. His enduring charm and wit will live on in our hearts.
Paul is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Albertville; his children, Paul Dean Jr. and wife Kelli of Arlington, TX, and Jeff Dean and wife Diana of Colorado Springs, CO, daughter Alicia and husband Jeff of Bellevue WA, and daughter Kelly and husband Scotty of Orlando FL; 6 grandchildren, Grace, Geoffrey, Tyler, Cameron, Jordan and Alexandra and great grandson, Isaac; brother Jerry and wife Connie of Guntersville; and special friend Johnny Davis of Birmingham.
