The Brindlee Mountain varsity boys baseball team is under new management after coach Reed Jones took over this past summer. Jones inherited a roster with lots of seniors and some up and coming talent.
The Lions next home game is Monday against the Fyffe Red Devils. Jones said he's looking to an experienced bullpen to help guide the Lions.
"This year we have a lot of varsity arms that can throw," he said. "Aspen Shilts, Noah Bearden, Jacob Shaver, Braxton Fields and Bryson Wilbanks are all good ones. As the season rolls on we will really start to learn who we can lean on to pitch an entire game for us. Most of our seniors and juniors are going to start forming into those main guys. Right now at the start of the season most of our main guys are just starting to get their form."
Starting for the Lions this year will be Braxton Fields at first base, Matthew Green at second base, Dalton Gresham at third base, Jacob Shafer at shortstop, Ian Garner at catcher, Aspen Shilts in right field, Noah Bearden in center and a combination of Trenton Caviness and Bryson Wilbanks in left field.
"The strength of the team right now is their will to win," Jones said. "These guys are hungry for a chance to prove themselves. I'd say our biggest weakness right now is experience in big games and the pressure of playing good teams."
Speaking of good teams, the Lions have a lot of them on the schedule this year. Whether it be area opponents, county foes or other, Brindlee will be tested on the diamond this year.
"The schedule this year is loaded with great teams," Jones said. "Our team is going to be challenged before we step into area play. We will play Guntersville and a lot of other good 3A and 4A teams. The goal is to be prepared when we step into area play with Susan Moore and JP Pennington. The county tournament will be held at the Albertville Parks and Rec. All four county schools will attend and I look for us to do well in that tournament."
