The Sand Mountain Shooters Club Paintball Team ended their 2022 season with one last major competition and even with an encounter from Tropical Storm Nicole.
Teams from around the world gathered in Kissimmee, Florida for the 2022 National XBall League World Cup Champion of Paintball.
The 4-day battle, which included both amateur and pro players, was cut short when the playing site closed on Thursday, Nov 10, and schedules were rearranged but no games were missed.
According to Daniel Baker, who coaches the team, he's proud of how everyone stepped up when they needed to.
"This was a huge competition," he said. "Our team and its players stepped up when they needed to. I couldn't be more proud."
Baker said nerves hit one player and another player had a prior injury but when it was time to gear up and play, everyone did their part.
"One of our girls, she was hurt but she saw her other teammate was throwing up because his nerves were so bad and she said, I have to do this. I have to get back out there," Baker said. "This was a learning experience for the whole team. We were up against good players. Teams from all over the world were there to play. Some of our players on the team are just teenagers but they have the heart and they love to be out there."
Baker said they are already excited for 2023 and hope to build and have 2 teams.
"You don't need any experience to be on the team. If you show up and you work and want to learn, that's what we want. We will work with you," he continued. "It doesn't matter your age or occupation, our team is made up of so many different people from every walk of life."
The Sand Mountain Shooters Club is located at 626 Bloodworth Road in Mountainboro.
