Guntersville Lady Wildcat Olivia Vandergriff has been named to the 2020-2021 All-State team as a sophomore.
Vandergriff is the lone girls’ basketball player from the Marshall County area to make the team this year. She was placed on the 3rd team for her efforts this season.
Vandergriff was a key player and reason for the Lady Wildcats significant turnaround this past season. Last season, Guntersville went 4-19 overall. This season, the Lady Wildcats made it to the Sweet 16 of the AHSAA tournament and posted a 23-7 record.
First year head coach Kenny Hill said he wasn't too surprised Vandergriff was placed on the All-State team.
"Olivia has been a lead by example player for us all year long," he said. "She's the first one in the gym and the last one to leave almost every time. She shot 36 percent from three-point, which is very good, and had over 200 points for the season. We're excited about the group coming back next season. Olivia is leading the charge when it comes to getting this team ready for the upcoming season."
Through 30 games, Vandergriff averaged 14.2 points per game this season and average 3.2 assists per game. She also made 80 three-pointers this season for an average of about three per game.
Vandergriff’s highest point total in any game was against Sardis in the sub-region matchup when she scored 27 points. She returns next season as a junior to go along with several other key players as the Lady Wildcats look build upon the 2020-2021 season.
