The Guntersville Wildcats Youth Football A and C teams begin their playoff campaigns today (Saturday) after a strong regular season.
Guntersville’s A team, which consists of 10, 11 and 12-year old players, is coached by Wes Long, Wes Cary, Ed Jones, Dustin Oliver and Scott Nelson. They finished 7-1 in the regular season and outscored opponents 222-87. The A team’s round one matchup will be against Douglas, at Douglas, with kickoff set for 1:30.
The Guntersville C team, consisting of 5, 6 and 7-year old players, is coached by Blaine Carlisle, Tyler Stone, Michael Saint, Trent Hand, Caleb Jones and Glen Fennell. The C team posted an impressive 8-0 regular season record and outscored its opponents 305-76. They finished first in their division and earned a bye week for the first round of the playoffs. The C team will play the winner of the Douglas vs. New Hope game at Madison County Elementary next Saturday.
Jeff Baucom is the Guntersville North Alabama Youth Football league vice president. He said there was no B team this year because the numbers weren’t high enough in that age group to make a whole team.
“We’ve definitely got two really good groups with these teams,” he said. “The coaches have done a great job with them, too. It’s been a lot of fun to watch them compete this season. Maybe we’ll see one or both of them play in the Super Bowl game.”
The league's Super Bowl will be held on Oct. 31 in Albertville at McCord Field.
